Get Real With Synthetic Hair

How to Create the Most Natural Look Possible. Remember it's a synthetic wig... Don't get caught worrying about who might know... Own it! Wear it!

If you don’t have a natural hairline, use the 90-degree angle trick. Simply place one hand in front of your face (fingers pointing up) and the other on top of your head. Where you finger tips meet at a 90˚ angle is where your hairline is!

Once you’ve positioned your wig, you’re ready to “up” the real factor.

1. TWEEZE THE PART & HAIRLINE.

A natural hairline is rarely even—and always has less hair density in front and around the part, notes Alan. Mimic this by plucking a few strands from your wigs hairline and part. And remember,  you’re not going for perfect, so move around the part and hairline as you tweeze. (Just be careful to NOT over tweeze any one area.)

2. CREATE A SEAMLESS LOOK WITH CONCEALER so the lace better matches your skin tone.

1) Turn your wig inside out and apply concealer with a small brush or sponge along the hairline and part.

2) Put wig on and apply a bit more concealer along the part (on the outside of the wig).

3) Blend concealer into your skin (as well as your wig’s lace) to complete seamless transition.

  • Consider using a makeup setting spray to keep concealer in place.

  • Regularly wash your wigs to prevent concealer from building up (which looks anything but natural).

3. REDUCE THE SHINE.

To reduce the unnatural shine that some wigs have when you first take them out of the box, use dry shampoo. (While some wig-wearers swear by baby powder, dry shampoo is a lot less messy.)

1) Spray entire wig liberally to saturate fibers.

2) Shake to let out the natural curl pattern.

3) Let dry fully on a wig stand.

4. BLEND WITH YOUR NATURAL HAIR.

If your wig and natural hair are close in color (and you have enough natural hair left), mimic real baby hairs by pulling a few little hairs out from under your wig cap (If needed, use a styling product to match your natural whisps with your wigs texture.)

5. ADD SOME BANGS.

While getting a stylist to give your wig a full custom cut can increase its natural look, the simple addition of some fringe in front (if your wig’s style allows) can create a soft transition from the forehead to the wig—if not conceal your wig’s hairline all together.
